Your home may be here while your bank, investments, and family are somewhere else. Bring those pieces into a coordinated California estate plan with The Andrews Law Firm.

For a full-time resident, the house may anchor daily life. For a second-home owner, it may be the place everyone returns to each summer. Either way, a stack of documents signed elsewhere may leave unanswered questions about ownership, access to money, and who can step in. Elaine Andrews can review those questions with you before a family emergency forces decisions.
California legal guidance tailored to your needs
Match the home and financial accounts to the written instructions.
Consider availability, communication, and backup appointments.
Identify when a move or purchase warrants another review.
Start with a practical inventory: the deed, bank statements, investment accounts, retirement beneficiary forms, and existing estate documents. Note which assets you own individually, jointly, or through an entity. An account held at a Bay Area institution is not automatically governed by a different estate plan because of its location. The important questions include title, contract terms, and the law that applies. Property in another state calls for coordination with counsel authorized there.
Consider a planning situation in which the owner is recovering elsewhere while the house needs attention and several account statements still arrive at different addresses. The useful question is not merely who inherits. It is who can arrange a repair, document an expense, speak with the institution, and find the operative papers. Describe that sequence during the consultation. Identify any asset that the proposed trustee would not control and any task requiring a different appointment. This exercise can reveal a funding or authority gap without assuming a crisis has already occurred. It also helps your chosen people understand the work they are agreeing to undertake and gives the legal review a practical purpose beyond producing documents to store.
A plan should address more than inheritance. If illness interrupts a winter stay, who can pay expenses, speak with financial institutions, or communicate your medical wishes? A durable power of attorney and advance health care directive serve different purposes. A successor trustee manages property held in a trust under its terms. Selecting people who can communicate across distance matters as much as naming them on a form.
A revocable living trust may help keep properly funded property outside probate. Signing the trust is only part of that work: ownership records must support the plan. A pour-over will can address property left outside it, but does not itself keep that property out of probate. Explain whether you want the home sold, retained for family use, or considered alongside other assets when dividing an inheritance.
A successor should know where documents are kept and whom to contact, without relying on memory or a relative who has never seen the records. Keep an accessible inventory of advisers, insurance, recurring expenses, and property responsibilities. Review the plan after acquiring or selling a home, changing a beneficiary, marrying, or moving. A coordinated review can identify conflicting instructions without assuming that every existing document needs replacement.

El Dorado County property belongs in the inventory alongside accounts maintained elsewhere. Geography alone does not tell your family who has authority over each asset.
