A trust can be signed while valuable brokerage assets remain outside it. Review account title, ordinary shares, and compensation-plan restrictions before sending blanket retitling instructions.

Brokerage holdings and employer equity arrangements are not always the same kind of asset. The Andrews Law Firm can discuss California trust funding from its Truckee office, subject to availability. Bring the actual statements and plan terms so the review distinguishes transferable ownership from benefits or rights governed by separate documents.
California legal guidance tailored to your needs
Separate taxable assets from special-plan interests.
Retain updated institutional records.
Handle retirement and restricted benefits appropriately.
Identify the registered owner, account type, assets, and any beneficiary arrangement. Ordinary taxable brokerage shares may raise a different funding question from restricted awards, options, retirement accounts, or employer benefits. An institution’s website may display them together without giving them identical legal treatment. Obtain statements and relevant agreements rather than assuming everything under the same login can be transferred to a trust. A clear account-by-account inventory helps avoid both an unfunded asset and an inappropriate attempt to move something governed by special rules.
Provide the full trust and amendments for legal review, then identify what documentation the institution needs to establish the appropriate ownership or designation. Ask how completion will be confirmed. A submitted form or pending request does not prove that the account title changed. Review the relationship between a trust certificate and the actual governing instructions. If more than one trustee must act, the account arrangements should reflect the relevant authority. Keep correspondence and the final records so the successor can see the result without reconstructing every conversation.
Retirement assets generally require beneficiary coordination rather than casually changing ownership to the living trust. Stock options, RSUs, and restricted awards may be controlled by compensation documents and transfer limits. Obtain employer-plan and tax advice where needed. A trust cannot create rights the owner does not hold or remove a plan’s restrictions merely by listing an award. Distinguish what is being funded now from what needs a beneficiary review or a separate analysis at a future triggering event.
Review the home, other accounts, intended beneficiaries, and successor appointments alongside the brokerage work. A pour-over will can address omissions but may still require probate to transfer property left outside the trust. A later account opening, company change, rollover, or share transfer can create a new gap. Keep a funding checklist that records the asset, recommended action, responsible person, and evidence of completion. Periodic review should confirm the actual title and designation rather than repeat the assumption that signing the trust covered everything.
A form sent to a brokerage may remain incomplete because of missing documents, a different account type, or another institutional requirement. Retain the response and compare the current statement with the intended ownership. Ask who will address an unresolved request and when the result will be checked. Do not mark the entire relationship funded because one account changed correctly. A separate retirement or equity-plan account may still need a different review. The successor benefits from a record that identifies completed actions and remaining questions. That is more useful than an unchecked instruction sheet suggesting that every asset under the same institution was handled in the same way.
