The trustee’s calendar.

  1. Day 0

The trust becomes irrevocable at the settlor’s death. Secure property and locate the documents.

  3. 120 days after notice

The period to contest the trust generally closes (Probate Code §16061.8).

  4. 9 months

Federal estate tax return due if required, or to elect portability for a surviving spouse.

  5. The following April

The final personal income tax return is due; trust income may require its own returns.

  6. Before distribution

Account to the beneficiaries and document their approval (Probate Code §16062).

Turn trust responsibilities into practical next steps

The Andrews Law Firm helps Tahoe City trustees connect the trust document with the work of administration. That includes reviewing authority, managing property, addressing debts and tax questions, and preparing for distributions. Each plan considers the type of trust and the people it serves. The first conversation focuses on the questions facing you.

Support across different trust arrangements

Revocable, irrevocable, and special needs trusts raise different questions. We review the relevant provisions and beneficiary circumstances so the trustee understands the requirements that matter to the administration rather than assuming every trust operates alike.

Coordinate the property and the paperwork

Real estate, investments, and personal property require organized attention. We help trustees review the assets and legal requirements, consider distribution decisions, and identify tax issues that need coordination with the appropriate professional.

California rules that apply in Placer County

The same state law, applied to Tahoe City property.

Tahoe City sits on the North and West Shores in Placer County, where lake-area homes and cabins are often held in a family for generations. A probate for a Tahoe City resident is generally filed in Placer County, and an inherited cabin that is not the heir's principal residence is reassessed under Proposition 19.

As grieving parents of our deceased son, we were in need of guidance with regard to what do we do next. Our son was without a will and, we had no experience with how to proceed. Luckily, we contacted Elane at the Andrews Law Firm Truckee who immediately understood our situation and was able to provide the information we needed and the necessary legal paperwork to resolve our problem. Our problem was magnified by the fact that we live in Milwaukee and involved my son's car for which we could not find the title. Rather than have to return to Truckee after 40 days to request a new title, Elane assisted us in creating a power attorney for a friend in Truckee which negated our having to return to Truckee from Milwaukee to simply apply for a new title. We are very appreciative with the help we found at The Andres Law Firm Truckee. Thank you, Elaine!

We were referred to Elaine Andrew's law firm through a friend and I'm very happy we went and sat down with her. She quickly recognized a few mistakes in our previous trust and worked to correct them and ensure that our trust followed all legal requirements. We now feel confident that we have a very solid trust for the future.

Elaine was very supportive and professional. She sincerely listened to my concerns and questions. She advised me of California Laws and guided me through the process of what steps would be the best for preparing my will. Kenneth reviewed page by page of my will with me (before signing) and answered all of my questions. I highly recommend The Andrews Law Firm they made my dreaded will preparation bearable. Thank you.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Tahoe City families.

What if the trust includes a special needs beneficiary?
Bring the trust and information about the beneficiary’s care and benefit arrangements. Ask for review of the distribution provisions before making a proposed payment. Note any immediate questions.
What property information should I bring?
Gather available deeds, account statements, investment records, and an asset list. Flag anything whose ownership or relationship to the trust is unclear.
Does the type of trust affect the review?
Yes. The document and its current status help determine the relevant questions. Bring all amendments and describe why administration or a trustee change is needed.
Can I ask about tax paperwork?
Bring existing returns, notices, and information about the assets. Discuss which questions need legal review and which should be coordinated with a tax professional.
What if beneficiaries need different things?
Describe each concern and identify the applicable trust provisions. Counsel can review the situation without assuming that a beneficiary request changes the trustee’s authority.
